Happy Wednesday! Are you keeping up with your reading? Falling behind?

A couple FFA anons mentioned watching Moon Knight for the first time, so somebody started an anniversary rewatch! …Interest dropped off pretty hard after the first few episodes, sigh. (I didn’t start it. I did end up finishing it.) But at least a couple nice observations came out of it.

I used this as an opportunity to tackle a project I’ve been meaning to do for a while: “cleaning up the MK episode transcripts I saved from a slightly-dodgy website.” Here’s one nice simple file with all the Moon Knight transcripts.

There are other enhancements I pondered throwing in, like “links with more info about the research topics Steven references” or “extended lyrics for some of the music” (somebody linked this Reddit post about the Arabic/Egyptian background music and how relevant the lyrics are, good stuff). Maybe next rewatch.

I'm not fond of using connectors because my experience is that they tend to tangle. But when I saw these pieces I had to get them because I do jigsaw puzzles. Paired them with some large orange glass and some alternating silver and gold hearts and artificial amber ovals. Then added the roughly hammered toggle because it made me think of papery jigsaw edges.

Oh my lordness, give your travel agent an extravagant tip. Especially if your travel agent is YOU!

Trips this summer:

Bike to Montreal!!!! We'll go armed with a list of campsites and other potential stopovers, because there are Many Unknowns. Gotta figure out how to get bikes home from Montreal (train bike boxes probably), where to stay in Montreal, how many amazing things to see and eat whilst there.

Arizona Summer of Ants. Outbound, I'll make fun stops in Colorado. I'll probably repeat my return itinerary from 2024, which was shorter and less beautiful, but which will get ants back faster. July will be Busy.

August is Germany for a conference. Need to learn about places to sleep in Frankfurt, and to book a train ticket from Frankfurt to Freiburg.

I'm ignoring that I am going to Rowing Camp the last weekend in August, though that will deserve some attention eventually.

Perhaps my summer motto should be, "Have bedroll, will travel." Well, that and some good coffee.

Looking at it all, I am actually going to NOT try and sign up for Organized Summer Rowing. Just Disorganized Summer Rowing for me, because I won't be around enough to be Organized.

Today is partly cloudy and mild.

I fed the birds.  I haven't seen much activity yet.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 5/13/26 -- We went out plant shopping.  First stop was Graber's in Tuscola.  They had 'Gypsy' peppers! :D 3q3q3q!!!  I bought six, plus a few other things.  I got a firecracker plant for the barrel garden, and a 'Truffula' pink globe amaranth.  Those are the last of the main flowers for the barrel garden, although I'll wedge in some marigolds if possible.

We also went to Backyard Gardens in Chesterville.  There I picked up a purple petunia with white spots and a white superbell for the big blue pot, plus a fancy coleus for the grape pot and a few other things.  I still need to visit Home Depot for things like 8-packs of marigolds, lobelia, and so on.  But today I found all the planned things and some others that I needed, so that's a big improvement. \o/

EDIT 5/13/26 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

EDIT 5/13/26 -- I did more work around the patio.

EDIT 5/13/26 -- I planted the whole Graber's flat of 10 plants. \o/ *accomplished*

EDIT 5/13/26 -- I planted the white-spotted purple petunia, white superbell, and purple torenia in the big blue pot.  I planted the 'Vintage Violet' yarrow in the septic garden.  I planted the Indian mint in the trough pot on the old picnic table, which finished that. \o/

EDIT 5/13/26 -- I did more work around the patio.

EDIT 5/13/26 -- I did more work around the patio.

EDIT 5/13/26 -- I planted the 3-pack of gazania in a trough pot by the new picnic table garden.

I watered plants in the new picnic table garden.

As it is getting dark, I am done for the night.

A Whole Little Free Library System

Redditor /u/tylerthecreativemode shares photos of a little free library in Berkeley, California. Most little free libraries are single boxes, often shaped like buildings. But this is an entire little free library system with multiple branches. I count eight boxes with books. Some redditors are dubbing it the Little Free Library of Congress or the Little Free Great Library of Alexandria.

The official LFL map shows numerous locations in Berkeley--apparently a city with a love for this community practice. The cozy, goblincore style is offers a welcoming ambiance. I'd love to visit.

Day 7, Endicott Arm/Dawes Glacier

Greetings from the mouth of Endicott Arm/Dawes Glacier! It's an overcast, lightly foggy day, but I'm hoping some of it burns off before we reach Dawes Glacier.

It's still beautiful. Today shall be a much needed chill day, where we can relax and enjoy sipping hot cocoa on the veranda and freeze our buns off. It's going to be glorious. Then, at 4:30, we shall go to get our pictures taken, as it is fancy night. I want plenty of pictures of this journey.

At 5:30, we have our renewal of vows, which is sure to be a lot of fun, and beautiful and meaningful. The vows they offered were absolutely wonderful, and we stuck with them. The captain will come down and mingle and do the ceremony. Then, there will be cake (Vanilla cake with vanilla icing and raspberry filling.). Then, it's off to Morimoto by Sea for what will hopefully be an excellent meal. Then, probably back tot he suite to relax and digest.

Tomorrow is our last port, Ketchikan, and I'm a little sad about that. Alaska has been so beautiful, and I have loved every minute of it.

Yesterday was a busy day, filled with shopping and then the train that took us 20miles into the mountains. The seats were incredibly tiny and uncomfortable as hell, but the views took your breath away. Or that could have been the 2,850 elevation we reached.

It was very interesting and informative, and as stated, utterly beautiful. There were places on the mountain that they'd plowed, and the snow was stacked up over my head.

It was very lovely, and despite the bruise on my thigh from pressing into my seat, it was worth it.

We also did some hardcore shopping for souvenirs, and brought home a lot of touristy stuff.

Then it was back to the boat for a quiet night. First we stopped to get some food, and then went up and relaxed until it was time for our exceedingly fancy dinner at the Pinnacle Grill. My starter was a Dungeness and crabmeat salad, with a siracha aioli artfully decorating the plate. It was excellent. Next was beef short rib with chow fun noodles. It was an enormous and so good. Of course, we tried each other's food. Jess had a very good prime rib, and my sister had the steak and lobster. For dessert, I had a Chocolate and Stroopwaffle cobbler. It was like a warm, barely cooked brownie and was so chocolately and wonderful. We finished off with some delicious macarons.

Then we went back to the suite and watched the sun slip below the mountains.

It was breathtaking.

Afterwards, we saw some seals playing by the boat, and the night was made. Then I slept hard until 6:44am, just in time for coffee to arrive.

Now I shall go forth and get dressed. Our food steward apologized, but the Dutch coffee did not taste right to him, so we have American coffee, and it'a a little weak, so I may go down to the Neptune Lounge and get a cappuccino. Everyone have an wonderful Wednesday!

Today's News:

There have been some rather blunt reminders recently as to why I've backed off on involvement with certain forms of bike advocacy in the area.

For one example, today was supposed to be Bike to Work Day, except it's scheduled as a Press Op, and boy do I ever feel like a Token whenever I've tried to show up for it. It starts at 8:30 am, when many people need to already be at work, and it involves traveling on a dusted-off bike within a fleet of Bike Police some short distance over to a podium where some words can get said about things but little actually ever changes on the ground.

And due to the rainy forecast, it got postponed to next Friday anyway.

Yes, I biked to work, like I do every day. I am celebrating with a cup of tea at my desk.

For a second example, there are some people in this area who are working pretty hard to forge broader connections and community among bicyclists. Then there are people who refuse to do anything other than the very particular way they've determined is the Only Way things can get done. You can make a wild guess about the primary demographic that behaves in that manner, and your guess is very likely correct, because this has been a longstanding Known Issue within cycling advocacy, and was in fact part of the reason why our Arizona advocacy organization got started - there was an opportunity to create something more inclusive, and people did.

There are times when it sucks to live in a place and have to think, things could be so much better here, but this obstinacy is getting in the way.

But on the other hand, the bike valet is a thing I can do and help out with. So I'll keep doing that.

A pretty odd one for today's MerMay. I was thinking about molluscs and some of those odd nudibranch species - colourful sea slugs and the like, and this guy developed. Drawn with the Kakimori steel nib, and one of the Van Diemen's ink moving day specials, Persian Princess. It is very sparkly.

commination (kom-uh-NAY-shuhn) - n., a denunciation, esp. one threatening divine punishment.

Also, in the Church of England (and for all I know other other churches), an office read on Ash Wednesday proclaiming God's judgments upon sinners. This dates to the early 15th century, from Anglo-French, from Latin Latin comminātiōn-, stem of comminātīo, past participle of comminārī, to threaten, from com-, here an intensifying prefix + minārī, to threaten.

Dear Eric: I strongly dislike tattoos, as does everyone in my immediate family. I can't fathom why anybody would want to ruin their skin and risk infections. I was hoping this fad would die and fade away like indoor smoking in a restaurant.

I can hardly bear to eat out anymore at just the sickening thought that someone with tattoos would be cooking, preparing or serving the food and taking out all the enjoyment for me. I know it's a personal choice, but why would anyone be proud to show them off like a really ugly piece of art on an ugly or aging body? Beats me. I don’t know what to do about this.

May 13th, 2026: This comic was inspired by ideas! If you've ever had an idea you know how sometimes they show up without warning and are easily forgotten. In this way they are much like breakfasts, especially when breakfasts show up at unexpected times and aren't memorable. DID YOU KNOW: not all similes are good??

The UK’s AI Security Institute evaluated GPT-5.5’s ability to find security vulnerabilities, and found that it is comparable to Claude Mythos. Note that the OpenAI model is generally available.

Here is the Institute’s evaluation of Mythos.

And here is an analysis of a smaller, cheaper model. It requires more scaffolding from the prompter, but it is also just as good.

Just tired. Always tired.

I did three things today (one of them a quite large and physically onerous errand). I should be proud of myself, but instead, I'm just tired.

My knee shows no sign of improving (the opposite, maybe), but my doctor is taking my concerns very seriously. She referred me to some imaging tests, so hopefully, pretty soon we'll be able to resolve whether this is inflammation caused by injury or impairment caused by (likely autoimmune) inflammation. It's just that in the meantime, everything takes twice as long and hurts three times as much.

I used to say I'm really practiced at being sick, but I think with this one, I've maybe hit my limit. Unless back then was worse than I'm remembering.

Got unexpectedly scheduled into a meeting tomorrow with four director-level-or-above people and ZERO backup, and also ZERO understanding of why this is happening. I am an HOURLY employee, I'm not supposed to have to meet with anyone higher-level than my manager!

ANYWAY that'll be an adventure! I'm definitely going to spend all day today panicking about it! ::nervous laughter::
