BUT I had a revelation which solves the Great Bed Dilemma. I shall get a king single, wot is small enough not to take up my whole room, and yet big enough to fit two people comfortably (provided they like each other, granted).

I'm in a king single. It comfortably fits myself and my son, who is in the habit of sleeping with arms and legs sprawled out; it also comfortably fits myself and the very tall individual whom I sometimes sleep with, provided we're spooning or in some way limb-entangled. Waaaay more comfortable than sharing a single bed - I struggled to fit in a single bed with Eduardo on account of his limb-sprawling antics.
