this year at the Sydney Show, they
turned the bulls around. They
hadn't thought of it before. The bulls
had always been shown rump out:
the way
that they were herded in. The brown
and black tonweights would squat
on legs numbly folded, which later
carried them as tremblingly
again as poddy calves. It must
have been thought that lolling eye-
to-eye with the spectators would
alarm bulls, but they actually
seemed to like it, and some gave
wonderful testosterone shudders
and snorts and their fame-drunk gaze
suggested a chorus of 'My Way', like
Saddam at his birthday party. Some
blinked with Bush's hyperthyroid eyes.
I
have never really gone along
with the thought that things like wars
are caused by men not women. Still,
these creatures roared theatrically because
their breath left the blank wall.
And they stir,
and their vast, brute, tragic faces cry
and deepen when the stroking hand withdraws.
