Do you Ubuntu?

I can has Ubuntu 12.10 running on my netbook! For the time being, at least - when Dad set it up, it was giving him pink-screen-of-death 3/4 of the times he started it. Suddenly it's playing nice and starting up properly 12 times in a row, but what's the betting it pink-screens me as soon as I get home?

It's shiiiny. Lightweight - much faster than Windows 7 Starter. And its odd layout is some kind of cross between a Mac interface and an Android interface. If I weren't used to Android on my phone I'd hate it, but I kind of love it now. Dropbox is installing as we type, and next I have to find some way of making Keynote run. Possibly using WINE (Wine Is Not an Emulator, apparently).

You're using the default Ubuntu interface, I guess? Because if you still aren't fond of the interface, there are lots of different GUIs out there for Linux.

And if you think it's lightweight... it's actually one of the clunkier Linux distros, lol. :D

Wine is pretty amazing. (and it's not exactly an emulator and the backronym gets rid of the Windows mention that used to be there)

I like the layout! The actual system will take some, er, getting used to - where getting used to equals swearing at, I expect - but the layout is shiny and lovely.

WINE would be wonderful if it would just show up in my system as an application. *kicks the Dash thing* Software manager thinks its installed, but Dash only gives me Confugire Wine and Winetricks

Linux (and other n*x like Android) are a certain kind of special that only happens when programmers design things. But they have great FAQs and forums and help pages? Linux Questions is great if you don't feel like the Ubuntu forums.

Wine... doesn't show up as an application? Does it show up in any of the other menus? *tries to remember what Ubuntu looks like*

Not that I can find! Ubuntu has this 'dash' thing where you type 'wine' and it returns all programs which have 'wine' in the program name. I can't find a 'program' drive or equivalent, although i'm sure it exists - so i haven't found a way to run it although it's installed. Dad reckons he's never managed to get WINE to make sense in Ubuntu and he gave up and went back t Puppy, but I will master Ubuntu eventually I'm sure.

Huh. Well, if you've got it installed, you can totally just run it from the command prompt with no problem.

It looks like you should be able to click an applications button? (is looking at screenshots on the website) The Wine webpage says that Wine comes with Ubuntu by default, so it should be there somewhere.

Can't run it from the command prompt either - it says there's no such file. BUT i can run windows programs *using* wine, by going to 'brows my C drive', so, er, that's a start.
