Toft, Simon? What's the *reading list* for MST1000Y? Can you recommend me a couple of texts therefrom?

My Latin course is annoying me *anyway* because it's not giving us any authentic texts or translations, and, at least at the moment, it's Quite Easy for little old me who actually knows what a declension is. So I'd decided I need to find myself some texts to translate, and I was starting with the Vulgate bible because I can pull up a Douay-Rheims for a crib if needs be. I'm well aware that the texts they throw at you in 1000Y are probably far beyond me... but I could start wrangling with them and acquiring vocab, at least?

There isn't really a reading list per se - it's just a class. Sadly there are no textbooks in medieval Latin. You can get sample exams online - our website, Language Programs -- Practice exams, and the Aids section below it is the best place to go for wordlists etc. We use the Latin textbook Moreland and Fleischer to teach our MA students, but any Latin textbook will do. My advice is to learn classical Latin, then start reading shitloads of medieval Latin. Anything from St. Augustine to random 15th century chronicles is fair game.

TBH, the more I think about this, the more I think it is unlikely they would take you directly into the PhD program with an hons program, especially if that didn't officially include Latin; I think you should email and ask them - gradadm.medieval@utoronto.ca . Btw, they won't take you into the PhD without offering you full funding (fees and living costs) for five years, but they don't officially offer MA funding. However, you can get a five year funding package on entry to the MA (I did) that then leaves you with four years of funding for the PhD, or you can just leave after the MA. They don't offer that to everyone, though, especially if they don't think you'll stay, for whatever reason.

Oh, there *are* textbooks for Medieval Latin! I saw some in Abbeys the other day. They are scary.

*tilts head* How did you manage the funding package for the MA? And are you a domestic or international student at Toronto? (I keep forgetting)

And I'm not trying to get into anything just on the strength of my Hons - I'll have an MPhil under my belt, and that *will* include Latin. Just first year, though :s.
