Anyone heard good or ill report about Susan Straub, currently teaching at Appalachian state? I'm trying to talk [livejournal.com profile] kitsunejin into taking "engendering the Renaissance" during her exchange there this semester, and Susan Straub's teaching it. Figured I'd ask if anyone had heard of her.

Since I'm a research geek and a dreadful snoop, I checked www.ratemyprofessors.com and couldn't find her, so I looked through Appalachian State's faculty lists and she's actually Susan Staub, no R, so I went back to Rate My Professors and there are mixed reviews. The better ones are for Renaissance-focus courses as opposed to English-lit ones and a lot of the bad ones seem to come from people who disagree with her, find her marking style too hard (I suspect they're slackers), or are guys. Or hey, all three. There are a lot of good enthusiastic reviews as well and they're relatively easy to find.

It's not that RMP is any kind of a decent source because who knows who's reviewing and what their preferences are in a course/a lecturer. But some info is better than none.

*grins* That's what I think too! The good reviews were really nice ones, they more than made up for the bad one. She doesn't sound like a J. A. S., and she's based through the Women's Studies dept. not the History dept. so that's probably good as well.

Also did you know that the comment boxes in your journal style are running into the calendar? I can't see what I'm writing behind the link-boxes that go to dated posts.

P'raps it's my screen resolution or size or something. Who knows. Firefox just updated, that might be the problem too.

...I am so lame, I really should have remembered that this site exists. -_-

But, yes, the reviews look good; I think I'm going to take it! Especially since I can take awesome Asia-related courses back at ANU anyway (classical Chinese fiction OMG OMG OMG!!) so it doesn't really matter that it clashes with the only two Asia-focused social studies courses offered. (Of COURSE they're both on at the same time!) Thanks for the snooping! :D

Thanks! As you can see below, I've decided that I'm gonna take it. :D

ALSO! You should post your Holmes fic here! LJ fic community focused on the relationships between all four leads, het slash gen and threesomes/moresomes welcome, and it totally needs more love. I wish my fic brain was working right now, I totes want to write something involving AWESOME LADIES, except it IS NOT WORKING. Or, like, it's working, but now is NOT REALLY THE TIME to start epic AUs where, like, SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER

the magic shit was not a giant fraud and Blackwood succeeded and now the four of them are on the run being revolutionary and awesome in a magical steampunk dystopia and and and NO, dammit, brain, I have neither the time nor the skills for that! D:D:D:
