'Solstices are solar events. The moon, on the other hand, is a purely lunar event.'
My Dad the great astronomer.
we went out swimming at twilight... or rather wading, and then Dad got the board and we paddled about on it for a while. It's very pretty and calm out there... I would've loved to photograph the dregs of the sunset around the point, but the camera'd get wet, and that's not good for cameras.
took photos of Joel today. damn it's hard to get a good photo when he won't open his mouth for fear of having his braces photographed. silly kid.
Mum and I had out photo taken on Thursday... bet we end up looking even stupider than we did last year. We only had one Santa hat, and the man wanted us outside in front of the church sign, at a table (how contrived...) popping crackers. bah.
on the bright side, Sue Woolmer rang to say that her mother got the paper which had the photo of Chris and I from the TAFE gallery opening, and apparently it's gorgeous. So I is happy, until i see it and find out otherwise. If it's as good as she says, i'll scan and post it, 'cos we did look excellent, and we matched each other just lovely. I borrowed Joel's new hat :D The photo man's eyes lit up when he saw us walk in... just hope neither of us was pulling a silly face. I've got a nice photo of Chris and I from my birthday dinner, too. It took a bit of editing... I'm very proud of myself, I managed darken my skin so i wasn't fridge-white, without having Chris go bright red in the process. Score for me.
I'm so bored. And quite lonely, too... I haven't been able to arrange to meet up with anyone all week 'cos i've been waiting on my putative employers, who keep saying they'll get me in and can't figure out when. On the bright side, tomorrow is the UYF beach day *grins happily* beach beach beach beach...
Have been watching The Vicar of Dibley... FABULOUS... HILARIOUS... and other things ending in OUS, but not bad things like 'atrocious'. Watch it, all ye people.
Also re-watched Mona Lisa Smile, which for no reason always seems to depress me. However, it's a truly wondrous movie, quite possibly top of the Amy List of Good Things. Well, not Good Things, just Good Movies, i guess. There are better Things out there... like chocolate, and waves, and Sara Douglass books.
erm... that might be all. 'night 'night dear LJites.
mood: boredish, but otherwise good
music: Dark Island- Mike Oldfield. Hey Josh (
mrlachatte), have you acquainted yourself with Mike Oldfield? You too Lukas, i have a feeling it's just the kind of weird stuff you boys would like. Some of it is, anyway. The album I've got is fairly tame Celtic stuff, but there's Tubular Bells 1, 2, and possibly three... and if his live recordings are anything to judge by, all sorts of other strange stuff out there.
book: The NonBorn King, Julian May- from the Exiles series. A very weird mix of fantasy and sci fi, about these misfits who escape the super-cultured world of the 22nd century in favour of the Pliocene epoch, only to find a species of bloodthirsty psychic aliens who dominate Europe and enslave all humans as labour or for breeding... Weird, but rather good. Characters include- a lesbian sadomasochist with latent psychic powers which are released by her torture, although it DOES send her mad and make her fall in love with the bloke that tortured her; an anthropologist who fell in love at first sight with a miserable medievalist and followed her six million years back in time; said medievalist, discovered to have the genes of the aforementioned bloodthirsty aliens, who was in books one and two married to the bastardly but very hot Crown Prince, who is carrying the old king's child (said king having the right of prima noctis) and is now engaged to a skinny upstart human with explosive mindpowers; said skinny upstart, who is claiming the throne; a nun-doctor who ran away from the future because of hidden guilt about not saving her family from death in hyperspace, and who is in love with the lesbian sadomasochist but wouldn't sleep with her because she herself was not a sadomasochist. And various other weirdos... one thing he's good at, Julian May, is creating wonderfully weird characters.
Also just read one of those 'Jesus and Mary bloodline conspiracy' books... Laurence Gardener, i think. was very interesting, particularly in regard to the Essenes at Qumran. I was suspicious of his scholarship, though... he just said 'this is' and rarely explained why or acknowledged any ambiguity. When he announced that Carlisle was Camelot, my suspicious were confirmed. I may not know about the Essenes of Qumran, but i certainly do know about Arthur...
picked up at the library, and started reading, The Te of Piglet... perhaps i ought to have read the Tao of Pooh first?
