Dec. 5th, 2005 04:17 pmSo... Advent Retreat. Good Stuff.
After a lovely relaxed fortnight at home, somehow I ended up horribly stressed by the end of worship on the first night... The whole weirdness of coming to Sydney with Newcastle people, coming from Newcastle but not going home... Having Newcastle people and Sydney people in the same place, but not my favorite people from either place. Was confusing. Cried at Lauren for a while, assuring her that this was normal Amy camp behavior. Whereupon she said 'yeah, i know what it's like having two homes', and i felt rather foolish.
Speaking of Lauren, we had a plague of Canadians. She's got an old schoolfriend of hers down at the moment, plus there was a random international student who's living at Corio house at the moment. Ella, I think. I rescued her from a little white-tail spider on the first night. She's virulently anti-gay. David Barrow got hold of her on the second night... that would've been an interesting conversation to eavesdrop on, but i was too tired.
David's one scary man. Political bastard extraordinaire. Lovely, but all the same, very scary. He was off with some great plan to have EU and Hillsong take each other out next year, to our net benefit. Very scary when he gets going.
He kindly brought along a pamphlet provided at Curtis' church, courtest of Focus On the Family, about the 'lie of homosexuality', and how people can escape therefrom. So nice of him to contribute to the public enlightenment.
Curtis is apparently planning on coming out to his church. Good luck to him.
Went to the beach on Saturday. John took us up to his 'spiritual home', North Avalon, which gave him much joy i'm sure. We went out there five cars in convoy, which was amusing. John kept having to pull over and wait for us to get through the lights. It was rather nice up there, but very flat. Lauren was scared of what little waves there were :P. The sand was weird too- all yellow, instead of white like proper Newcastle sand. I hit on the brilliant tactic of swimming in my Fresher Shirt, which a) prevented sunburn and b) hopefully the salt will have gone someway towards destroying said shirt. Downside is that my lovely swimmer top is hidden :(
I did not get burnt at all at the beach, and only slightly in the car on the way home. Go me. Aim for this summer: not to end up tomato red at any point. May have to buy a rash shirt, but the Fresher Shirt seemed to do a pretty good job.
The sun is glaring in the window at me. This is annoying me. Huh.
Was nice having a trip home with the Rah, got to talk to her 'bout all sorts of things. She's a good kid, that Rah. We stopped on the way and bought a box of fruit flavour ice blocks :D yummies.
So, now on to three months of being a Novocastrian. Why do i get the feeling that I'm going to spend these months madly missing UCATSA, same as I spend most of the year missing the UYF? I is a silly creature, sure enough.
I have sent Tock a reassuring message to say that I have not come home with a husband, so she can quit worrying. I haven't told her that her ownership is in dispute- my leg gained a big blue 'property of E. Schubert' that only came off today. Picked that up during the trivia contest, in the first few rounds when i knew a whole heap of answers. Which is unusual enough, i rarely know trivia answers. No one ever asks what year Pope Innocent III came to the papal throne (1298, if anyone cares).
Speaking of trivia night... the new Boss Man of Tertiary Mission is a ballerina. Or what ever the male term for ballerina is. He used to work with the Australian Ballet, and gave us a few sample spins around in the air. Sadly there were no points to be had for the dancing contest :( I liked Boss Man, anyhow. He preffers to be known as Damian. For some reason he doesn't like Boss Man as a mode of address. No idea why.
There ought to be a Pete Hobson Fan Club, for he is truly fantastic. Haven't had a chance to hear him teach since NCYC 03, i thought i might have been deluded as to his exellence. I was not. I think I might even prefer him as a teacher to John... he's not so obviously agenda-driven.
Looks like I've got a job. At a juice bar, wahoo. Seems like a well run place, very spacious, easy to clean. Better than Zoom, anyhow.
mmkay, this will do for today. Take care you lot.
