I have a file I downloaded. It's a .rar file, and the uploader masked it by giving it a .ppt extension. I've now got it on my computer, and I'm using vista. Does anyone know how to make vista change the file extension of a program? Adding .rar after filename just makes it filename.rar.ppt.

This is how you do it on XP. Hopefully it's pretty similar to how Vista does it:
Go to Control Panel. Find File Types. On XP it's at the top of the left hand column, not the main panel.
When you open File Types, it comes up as a three tab panel. You want the tab labelled File Types. That will bring up a list of options for preferences. There is one that reads something similar to "Hide file extensions for known file types". The XP default is to check it, so file extensions don't show. Uncheck it, accept/confirm or whatever Vista needs you to do to apply the changes, and exit Control Panel. You'll find that all file extensions are now showing, so the your file that was named "Rudd is an idiot" is not "Rudd is an idiot.doc". Rename the file as filename.rar and you should be home free. If having the extension showing on filenames bothers you, you can always go back and restore it to the Vista default in the same way you changed it.

Hoppy Oestre!

AHAH. It's in a menu called Folder Options, apparently. Sorted. Thank you :D
