Does anyone know if Anglo-Saxon language was ever on the British school curriculum?

If one were being educated in a prestigious school in the early 1900s, and going to university in the 19-teens or early 20s, would one first encounter AS language at school or university? I wants to know, precious.

(Rymenhild- this is for your requested fic. I haven't forgotten, promise. Just taking a while to figure out how to work in my RIDICULOUS MEDIEVAL JOKE.)

From studying Tolkien's life, a British student could encounter Anglo-Saxon at school before university. I do not know if A-S was a mandatory part of the curriculum, but between 1904-08, Tolkien encountered medieval literature and languages while attending King Edward's School (grammar school, he was at the age of 12-16), and he was spurred on by a teacher to read and learn the original languages--Old English, Middle English, and Old Norse.

I hope that helps!
