Apparently pantyhose are back. I didn't know they'd ever gone away, but ok. Also, why on EARTH would you tuck your cardigan into the waistband of your pantyhose?

M. Leblanc is appropriately incensed about the presentation of pantyhose as inherantly modest, and the corequisite assumption that bare legs are unproffessional or slutty. (Solution- wear pants. One of the many benefits of living in the twenty-first century is that we've had the right to wear said practical, comfortable and stylish items of clothing for some time now. Hell, even Women's College has been letting us wear pants for formal dinner since 1994.)

Meanwhile, areyoustrange presents us with this moving tirade against pantyhose:

I can remember hating tights and stockings passionately in school, particularly when we were forced to wear them for half of the year. Once that rule got rescinded, I would freeze in my skirt and socks rather than wear stockings, for many a year. In the last twelve months though, I have discovered that stockings are fun. I even have those silly footless tights. Yes, shoot me now.

I'm a fan of leggings, but then they went out of style and everyone stopped selling them for a few years. Now they're back, but I've only been able to find cheaply made ones which just aren't worth bothering with. Yes! there are alternatives to stockings.

I discovered lovely soft, thick stockings this past winter, and infinitely preffered them to pantyhose. For one thing, no one can tell whether or not you've shaved your legs if your tights are thick enough!

I have never in my life successfully put on a pair of pantyhose. I've only tried a handful of times. I wear tights. They're robust, they last a long time, they're more-or-less opaque, and I can buy them in lots of fun colors. (Of course, I'd still like to have some good leggings back in my life.)

(Also, not sure how these words translate into Australian. Pantyhose is used in American, but in the UK, "tights" covers both pantyhose and what I think of as tights, just to add to the confusion.)

heh, yeah. the terminology here is a mess of UK and American terms, i think. What i think of as "Stockings" is American pantyhose- the thin ones. And what i think of as *tights* covers basically everything else. Leggings are the lycra eighties things, right?

That's the basic style of leggings, yep, although I prefer them with high cotton content. Form fitting and footless. They're especially good in cold climates where I can layer them on top of tights when it's really cold. (Now that I'm in the UK, this is not so much a problem, so I don't miss them as much as I did when living in Canada.)

I'm not bothered either way - I just wear jeans and ignore fashion completely.
