What Are You Reading Wednesday
May. 28th, 2019 07:58 pmCurrently Reading:
Fiction: The collection 'A Hand of Knaves', in which I have a story. Alyssa Cole's 'Let Us Dream', and, very slowly, Redwall.
Lit Mag: Still Meanjin summer 2018! I finished the Alexis Wright essay and it will turn up in my link post when I finally catch up my link post with my reading.
Academic: Nothing
Other non-fiction: Zip and zilch. I meant to start Educated, but I realised I needed to start on the Binti trilogy for book club.
Recently Finished:
Just one:
Away with the Fairies by Kerry Greenwood
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
A solid, reliable Phryne novel. Two well-developled plots skillfully entwined. Consistent characterisation and reliable historical work. Excellent pacing - which was even lampshaded, as Phryne comments at one point on how a case will remain a tangle for ages and ages and then suddenly all straighten out. Dot got to do some solo detecting work, the mystery plot involving the agony aunt provided some balancing to Phryne's go-getter lifestyle, in terms of commentary on the sexual and romantic options available to women at the time. Also a Daring Rescue of a Man In Distress!
I remain baffled that Phyrne continues to refer to Lin Chung, at this point in their relationship, as 'Lin dear', and never by his personal name. Kerry Greenwood clearly *knows* how Chinese names work (although I think perhaps she didn't when Lin Chung was first introduced), and... look, it's just a bit weird to get to the point of intimacy and interdependency they're at, without ever using personal names.
Ed: And I finished 'Let Us Dream' last night, after I drafted this post. Review next week.
Up Next:
Well, I bought 1 & 2 of Binti, with a view to book club in June. Binti 3 and Murderbot are also on the agenda, for similar reasons.
Music Notes:
I bought Arashi's 2010 album Boku no Miteiru Fūkei, with aid of K, in HMV. HOWEVER: my DVD drive doesn't read Disc 2, the disc with the track I most wanted on it. I'm fairly sure this is an 'old tech' problem, not a 'corrupt disc' problem, but... how make CD play??? I guess I could take it to work and try it on the actual CD players there...
Otherwise, uh. I did listen to several Dessa albums via Spotify, but they haven't stuck in my head. Mostly it's Grace Petrie. Lady Gaga, and revisits to Paramore's 'After Laughter'.
