Optus has launched one of the weirdest direct-marketing campaigns of recent times. A colleague has passed us a plastic bag that lobbed in her mailbox last week with "ALERT" printed in yellow, followed by, in much smaller print: "The enclosed envelope has been intercepted because we believe it contains spam, similar to the kind of that's usually sent to your email address. At Optus we offer you a complete internet security suite …" and so on. Inside the plastic bag is an envelope containing a photocopied letter, personally addressed to the occupant, claiming to be from a Dr Eugene Opjowi, of the "Zamgerian National Electricity Foundation", offering vast wealth to our colleague, upon the divulgence of bank account numbers. It's all very strange.
