in a dream last night, i was sitting at a table with some people i knew well- can't remember who they are now. I think we were studying.
I was having an in depth conversation with the guy across from me. The disturbing thing about it- and this worried me even in the dream- was tha we both had laptops on the table, and as the conversation got more involved, we completely stopped speaking and started typing because it was quicker and easier. The conversation become this weird mix of typing and speaking- i'd type something, he'd look over at me, and say 'oh, interesting, but...' as his fingers were flying over the keyboard to explain the 'but'.

i used to not be able to think without a pen in my hand. if you were talking to me, and having a complicated conversation, i had to be playing with a pen. As i typed up essays and whatnot, i had to be playing with a pen while i stared at the screen thinking. I find it a little disturbing, don't ask me why, that typing has replaced that completely now. The day i actually find my fingers twitching to type as i talk, i'll be very worried.

Another worrying..though most likely quite impossible thought..

Would be if the use of computers to communicate with others..would oneday take away the ability to properly communicate with other people directly.

But who knows...maybe in some ways it already has.

That's social evolution for you. Maybe people felt the same way about the first writing implement?

"But Grandma, look, I can write the Old Stories *down*, and then I'll be able to read them to my kids, and to my kids' kids, and they'll be able to read them to their kids and grandkids long after you're gone. Your stories will last forever!"

"Don't hold with that modern stuff" *grumble* "'s not proper. The only way to tell a story is sitting around the fire with you rabble. I want my stories to die with me!" *hmph*

books you can burn- particularly when there's only one copy, as there was when writing first arrived in most places in europe. whereas if you tell a story to enough people it's likely that some of them will survive to tell it to some MORE people... i'm thinking orality would have seemed much more sturdy to many people.

i know when compulsory schooling was introduced in britain people complained that teaching children to read would stop them using their imaginations- much as we complain about TV today.
