Actually, I've since gone and checked what the "official" rulings on What A Kobold Is and they are not as I was told. I much prefer the "official" rulings.

childlike in appearance, height-wise at least
usually invisible but can take multiple forms, including human, animal, object and fire (fiery kobolds also called drakes amongst other things, which is the name given to a wingless, four-legged dragon)
sometimes helpful, doing chores around the house
if insulted or neglected they'll be mailicious and prankster-like
linked to dwarves and goblins, they are spirits of the earth (despite variants that are sea-faring)

Everything else I'm cool with except that last point. I'm a Fire, not an Earth. But I guess it's better than being called a Water. I am thankful that there is at least a link to dragons though.
