Well now I've just spooled out a whole fictional premise for a three gender system, with man, woman and darling being two kinds of adults and one uncomfortable, friction-filled category of benevolently protected but not quite fully emancipated persons (children, the very elderly, and adults who decline to occupy one of the two standard options).
Do I have a plot? Nope. But I sure do have a premise that, if I can find a plot for it, would make a nicely unsettling story...
