End of Year Meme

It's that time again!
1. What did you do in 2019 that you'd never done before?
Uh. Lived in Japan, that would be the obvious one.
2. Did you keep your New Years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I did not acquire any really useful Japanese, or semi-functional German. Some latin; not much progress on book of PhD. I did not entirely abandon creative writing, but nor did I finish anything.
This year... I want to be both productive and balanced, and geez, I have no idea how to do that.
3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Nope!
4. Did anyone close to you die?
No, slightly to our surprise.
5. What countries did you visit?
UK (England and Scotland), Switzerland again, Japan, Australia
6. What would you like to have in 2020 that you lacked in 2019?
Well I'm going to have the key thing, 'decent income'. 'Sex life' would be nice, but let's not get carried away here.
7. What date from 2019 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
Uh... probably the 31st as the Date of Departure!
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
I am really struggling to think of that. I did a lot of things, but none of them felt like achievements. I did not triumphantly enjoy my time in Japan, for instance. Nor did I complete a book manuscript, or take a magnificent break or... many things.
9. What was your biggest failure?
As with last year I'm banned from assessing failures.
10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Yeah. I got pretty guts-sick in Japan, I got the mental elfs, and I had wisdom tooth extraction complications.
11. What was the best thing you bought?
I... don't know. Trousers with cockatoos on them, possibly.
12. Whose behaviour merited celebration?
Uh... my family, I think? They are trying, bless them.
13. Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed?
*gestures bleakly at global politics* (ie, exactly what I said last year)
14. Where did most of your money go?
Moving countries thrice. Living expenses in UK and Aus.
15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Relatively little, again, except for a brief Good Omens phase. And a New Shiny person.
16. What song will always remind you of 2019?
Probably something by Grace Petrie. Pride? God Save the Hungry? Farewell to Welfare?
17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. happier or sadder? Happier, but more anxious
ii. thinner or fatter? significantly thinner but only a little lighter
iii. richer or poorer? definitely poorer
18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Either academic book work or relaxing, which might be mutually exclusive.
19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Honestly, I think I wish I hadn't gone to Japan.
20. How did you spend Christmas?
I was home with family; helped with the open lunch at the church. Actually WENT to church.
21. How will you be spending/ did you spend New Year's?
ONNA PLANE.
22. Did you fall in love in 2019?
Both out of one and, unexpectedly and abruptly, into another.
23. How many one-night stands?
LOOK IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE A ONE-OFF THING but it hardly counts if you proceeded to rearrange your schedule to repeat the proceedings as often as possible for a month before leaving the country.
24. What was your favorite TV program(s)?
Good Omens, I guess!
25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
No but I have some more resentments.
26. What was the best book you read?
I cannot answer this question, refer to forthcoming book meme.
27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
Grace Petrie, Grace Petrie!
28. What did you want and get?
My pension money back! A loud jumpsuit! A new kobo! So many things!
29. What did you want and not get?
Uh... look the big one involves the failing end of my last relationship, let's not even go there
30. What was your favorite film of this year?
I don't think I saw any.
31. What did you do on your birthday?
Family bought me Thai takeaway. There was a Family Drama that ate up most of the birthday.
32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
I think, had I not gone to Japan, and had come home early in the year instead.
33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2019?
I wouldn't. I had some... uh... presentation/gender/Japanese appropriateness angst, really.
34. What kept you sane?
Uh... i don't think i qualified as sane. New Australian psych definitely helped.
35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Grace Petrie, Grace Petrie!
36. What political issue stirred you the most?
At this point, a better question is: is there any political issue that does not fill you with utter dread and despair? (ie, the same as last year)
37. Who did you miss?
K. L. My most recent ex. My family, sometimes.
38. Who was the best new person you met?
Oh my glob don't make me admit it, I am so ridiculously gone on New Shiny person you have no idea.

Hot chips are often dusted in wheat flour.
40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:
"Well that’s fine
Cause I decline
Your narrow set of rules they just don’t work
These red lines
They’re not mine
And if you need me you can find me ironing my shirt"
