Angelina Jolie is doing philology!!! Angelina Jolie is doing philology naked!!!

(Does it get any better than that?)

Thus asks Michael Drout, in his personal review of the new Beowulf movie. Indeed, this is a question worth asking. Is anything hotter than naked philology? I think not.

[profile] iremos, my german-american lover, had an icon when I first met her, a most excellent icon which ordered its viewers to WRITE NAKED. Which is pretty hot, but not as hot as philology.
Your injunction for this week: DO PHILOLOGY NAKED (but please, for the love of Bede, don't post photos of it on the internet).

Are you visitor number 666? Visitor number 666 lives in Sydney, in or around the suburb of Kellyville; they use Internet Explorer 7 and are with bigpond.1 They were also visitor number 665, which is infinitely less cool, and have been frequenting my blog quite regularly. I've no idea who you are, visitor #666, but I hope you're enjoying my ramblings.2

1. Yes, i realise this is a little creepy. Think of it as a public service announcement: there is no such thing as anonymity on the internet. My sitemeter isn't even installed properly- LJ won't let me embed it in the webpage, so it's stuck in the front page post. Nevertheless, it tells me how many visitors I get, and, with greater or lesser accuracy, where from (it thinks my Dad is in Sydney, for some reason). It can also tell me, although I think this is dependant on your computer's security setup, what operating system you run, what browser, and whether or not you use Javascript.

2. While we're at it, greetings to the intermittent reader in Norway. It's pretty cool, having a reader in Norway.
And to the person in Liphook, Hampshire, just because Liphook, Hampshire, is the coolest place name I've seen in a while.

Look at the party distribution.
Assuming Labor keep the Greens on side, they can match the Coalition. Xenophon tends to lean left, but Family First will run with the Coalition on most things. So we have a squared Senate. Labor will have their work cut out for them trying to attract Nationals votes across the floor without losing the Greens.

On the bright side, Family First aren't exactly fans of work choices. So industrial relations reform might just get through. Environmental reform is practically fucked though. Do Labor need tp pass legislation to sign Kyoto?

Well... etymology. And possibly not naked. But still, a girl can dream, right?

Throughout his sermons Wulfstan demonstrates not only an enthusiasm for etymology in a fashion typical of many medieval writers, but a particular fondness for defining technical terms by comparing Greek and Latin synonyms or Latin and English synonyms.
-Thomas N. Hall, "Wulfstan's Latin Sermons", in Wulfstan, Archbishop of York: The Proceedings of the Second Alcuin Conference, ed. Matthew Townend (Belgium: Brepols Publishers, 2004), pp 93-140 (pp 105-6).

I knew I loved this man for a reason.
(Wulfstan, that is. Not Thomas Hall, who is nevertheless pretty cool.)
