It varies from day to day, and it also depends on the quality of both your connections. I did find that if you pay the small amount of money to call from your computer to a real phone, the quality is very good even on a poor connection.

i discovered it worked MUCH better once my father and brother had gone to bed and got off the internet... so i suspect the probelm was with my connection :)
