That... does not surprise me tbh. I had a weird experience of protestantism where I kind of didn't have much interaction with mainline evangelicalism? Sydney Anglicans were an actual shock to me when I started at USyd, and I was already committed to the Uniting Church (also a shock to me, the summer before I started undergrad: encountering Uniting Church youth worship which had altar calls and all that shit!). Actually, as a child of the Uniting Church In Australia, re-checking my memories about William J Seymour and the Azusa St Revival was enlightening because this time I checked out Seymour's background and the "Holiness movement" in Methodism.
Which... uh... explains a lot of things which neither Anne of Green Gables (presbyterian propaganda) nor my actual home congregation (methodist roots) nor any research I did on the history of the UCA could answer, about, for instance, why Wesley Mission is known outside the UCA as "those good charity guys down in Kings Cross" (never heard a wooord of criticism re various 'phobias) and yet WITHIN the UCA was the name of a leading No Gays Here congregation. As far as I know, Australia's first known "straight camp" was run by Wesley Mission congregation! Unlike many other Noted Objectors To Gay Ministers and/or Marriage, they do not seem to have split off from the UCA (and it's now impossible to google the network of Extremely Committed Homophobic Congregations because they called themselves Affirming Congregations, as in, affirming the scriptural etc - impossible to google because all the results now get you queer affirming UCA churches).
METHODISTS. I blame them for much but must also credit them for many things.
