Three Cheers for someone who doesn't blame women's problems on men.

But, this being Jane Moore, who is paid to get people hot under the collar, there’s a twist in the tail of her argument. “The biggest conclusion I’ve come to is that we women are doing it to ourselves. And that, as mothers, if we’re constantly on a diet and scrutinising ourselves, why are we surprised when we pass on that neurosis to our daughters? We are the ones who buy these magazines, we’re feeding the business. The pressure isn’t coming from men.”

according to something else i was reading somewhere, men are suffering from increasing body image problems thanks to male-oriented advertising (whereas women's can be blamed equally on male- and female- oriented ads). Apparently a survey of images of men in FMH and the like, compared to those in Cosmo and Cleo and all the rest, showed that men are shown a significantly more muscular and unattainable ideal of manhood than are women. Apparently the survey didn't include *gay* men's magazines, it'd be interested to see how they compared.

I do actually remember hearing something about that. Quite possibly from you. I didn't know that it was worse for men than women, though, just knew it was worse now than before. I think if they included gay magazines, the results would show it even harder on men. Gay men are stereotypically more likely to be more superficial, vain and pretentious about looks, fitness, and attractability, after all.

And it's FHM, btw - For Him Magazine.
