More Greek music - Amalgamation Choir

Back in 2019, I posted links to the fabulous Amalgamation Choir from Crete, led by Vasiliki Anastasiou. In particular, I loved Tis Trihas to Gefyri from Pontos in 9/8. (lyrics)

Recently I went to a concert by Phoebe Vlassis, who weaves at a loom and sings at the same time. At the end of the concert she raffles off the weaving she made during the concert. She opened with Tis Trihas to Gefyri, which I recognized immediately. I asked her about it after the concert, and she said it was the first song she tried singing while weaving.

So I looked around for Amalgamation Choir, and it turns out they're still around! Here's a 20 min concert, posted in 2020.

Now, not even 25 years later, the United States Department of Agriculture was forecasting a pitiful 12 million boxes of oranges, the least in more than 100 years, the worst year since last. A decline of more than 95 percent.

Ritual Noize Fest

The inaugural Ritual Noize Fest!

I took last weekend off to go to Ritual Noize Fest! I've been excited for it since it was announced last fall. There was a bit of a lineup change, as I'd said before, which was a shame for multiple reasons, but the excitement remained!

It was an excellent time!

The venue is "ReelWorks" which is a large venue attached to Tracks, a fairly well-known gay club. We used to be down there fairly often, back when Tracks had a regular goth night. (It was also baby's first club when I went out to celebrate my 21st birthday!)

...yikes has the whole area changed. We'd noted that the most recent time we went there for a concert, which was a couple years ago. That was the first time we'd been down post-Covid, so it was kind of a big shock to see a bunch of pricey condos had replaced the old warehouses.

At that point a couple years ago it felt like it had maybe become maximum bougie, but it has gotten so much bougier. There are basically no warehouses left at all, and all the weird little art studios and makerspaces and mostly-illegal housing collectives are long gone. Patagonia and Arcteryx have competing storefronts across the street from each other now. There's a bank. Everything has a fucking QR code. There are $750k condos. We parked in the bougiest parking garage I have ever seen in my life. (The whole thing locks down completely, you have to scan your ticket QR code to get back in (god help you if you don't have it), there's a lounge area?? though it was closed for the weekend. Like... I AM glad to not have my car broken into or the catalytic converter stolen, but...)

BUT. We did make it down there, and did quite a bit of pre-gaming in the car before heading in, anticipating fuck-off expensive well drinks.

It turned out that well drinks were not nearly as expensive as anticipated, which was dangerous. I had... more to drink than I've had in the last five years, pretty sure. Delightfully, I was able to stay pleasantly drunk for much of the show, but never got to the point of feeling sick or like I was missing what was going on.

I swore that I would just... magically remember the setlists. I did not remember the setlists. I was quite drunk.

We arrived partway through Hex Cassette's set (two pictures):

Hard to tell when he's on the floor, but he is very tall. I hadn't ever seen him, though I know I've seen him listed as an opener before! Wasn't my favorite sound, but he was good. It was still clearly early, and not much of a crowd had shown up, but he did start the slowest mosh circle possible, which was entertaining.

I could not find his setlist posted online.

A net full of blow-up dolls lurks ominously above the pit.

Then it was Whorticulture's turn, which was probably who I was second-most-excited to see!

Two more pics of Whorticulture, plus Plack Blague:

During "Faust."

It's standard that at some point he will end up stripping down to the crop-top, which he will generally acknowledge. So we did get "YES, THE CROP TOP COMES OUT NOW!" shouted before they started playing "Crucify."

As our local openers, they only got to play four songs (;_;) which I DO actually remember:
- Within/Without
- Faust
- Crucify
- Make Me Dead (live debut of their new song, just released a couple days before!)

"Within/Without" is an older one, and I was glad that they played it! One of my favorites, and I think it got the slot that "Benefits of Torture" would usually get, but I like it a little better. "Faust" is new-ish, and quite possibly my favorite of all their songs, so I was very glad it got played. "Crucify" is a cover of the Tori Amos song, but I think one of their most popular (and always comes with the crop top, so.) "Make Me Dead" is brand new, and I forgot to go listen to it in advance, so it was my first time hearing it!

I'm not unbiased, because they are a local group that I really like, but I think Whorticulture deserved higher billing. They're damn good. (Not that any of the other groups AREN'T good, or didn't deserve their spot on the bill. I just think Whorticulture deserves more, haha.)

Then we went over to Whorticulture's merch table, where I was delighted to discover that they did a new run of their "Goth as Fuck" shirts. (It's a play on the "Queer as Folk" logo, and I love it.) They sold out of those long ago, so I was glad for another chance to get one.)

Our time hanging out by the merch and then heading to get drinks meant we missed most of Plack Blague's set. I'm not familiar with him, but what I heard was good! Gay leather industrial-style, ha.

I didn't find his setlist online either, though as we were heading past the floor to get another drink, he did announce something to the effect of "You know what turns me on? MAN! ON! MAN!" so I do know that was one of his songs that got played!

Refortified with drinks, we managed to get back up toward the front-ish for Julien K. They were great! Ended up being one of my favorite sets from the night.

Three more pictures:

His goggles were so bright. Blindingly!

I am frustrated that I wasn't able to find their setlist either!

They did close out with Blue Monday, which surprised me, since I just sort of assumed they wouldn't want to hearken back to Orgy, but I was certainly not disappointed!

Their much better picture, ha.

Then, Aesthetic Perfection! (The other group I was most excited to see.)

Three more pictures:

I DO have a setlist for them!
- Gods & Gold
- S E X
- Rhythm + Control
- Antibody (call me a basic bitch, but this is one of my favorites and I basically knock myself over jumping to it every time.)
- Sorrow (huge tonal shift from Antibody, but also a fave)
- Summer Goth (Alex hates this song, lol. I find it terribly relatable.)
- Self Inflicted
- Into the Void
- We Bring the Beat
- Never Enough (another fave)
- Schadenfreude
- The Great Depression (I still think this was a perfect opening song, per the previous show I saw them at. Starting off with "HEY YOU MOTHERFUCKING SON OF A BITCH" is just so good. It's fine as a later song, too.)
- Love Like Lies (This one we got to pick between two choices. I was rooting for Spit It Out instead, but ah well.)

Lords of Acid!

Five more pictures:

Okay, maybe this is an unpopular opinion... but I think Lords of Acid is better in recordings than live. Their live shows are fun, and energetic, and they do a lot of stuff, but the showmanship is more of a draw than the music when they're live. The sound seemed muddled (which I don't think was a sound issue with the venue; none of the other acts were hard to hear), so other than a few words, it was hard to really hear them, even though it was all very loud. Alex saw them a few years ago, and he had the same impression that time. But! It was definitely fun!

Alex did turn to me and ask "So... do they just replace the frontwoman every couple years?" as this is a different singer than the last time they came through.
I told him "Yeah, they need a New Designated Hottie!"

(That is me being a little dismissive. It's not untrue, but all the Designated Hotties are also very talented!)

Current Hottie Carla Harvey can headbang like a motherfucking champ.

(Thank you, nameless support roadie.)
(The net of blowup dolls lurks ominously.)

Inviting women up on stage for "Pussy," of course.

And then it was time for "Rubber Doll," so...

THE BLOWUP DOLLS RELEASED!

Except this one. :'( The saddest story: For retrieval: Blowup doll, never fallen.

The Lords of Acid setlist:
- Scrood Bi U
- Do What You Wanna Do
- Lover
- Drink My Honey
- Mister Machoman
- The Most Wonderful Girl
- Pussy
- The Crablouse
- Rough Sex
- Rubber Doll
- Encore: I Sit on Acid

And finally, She Wants Revenge.

(Still wish it had been VNV, even though that would have been even more dramatic whiplash after Lords of Acid, lmao. Glad we did have another headliner willing and able to step in! First chance I've had to see She Wants Revenge, so that's cool, too.)

Two more pictures:

I was suddenly struck with "Wait, shit. How many She Wants Revenge songs do I even know??" Turns out, a lot more than I thought, ha.

I've never been super into them beyond what got played at the club, though I was happy for them when they had a sudden surge of popularity after American Horror Story: Hotel.

Very red.

She Wants Revenge setlist:
- Black Liner Run
- Sister
- Written in Blood
- These Things
- Sarah Says
- Someone Must Get Hurt
- A Little Bit Harder Now
- Your Love
- Rachel
- These Things Happen in Threes
- Red Flags and Long Nights
- Do No Harm
- Black Wax, Our Love
- Gossip & Drugs
- Out of Control
- Tear You Apart

The most difficult part of leaving was the damn parking garage, lol. Several people were struggling to get their QR things to scan, or having a hard time paying, and it held up the whole line quite a lot, lol.

The show was very fun, but man was I tired. We headed home, tossed a frozen pizza into the oven, and devoured the whole thing. Drank some water, took some preemptive ibuprofen, and went to bed, lol.

Also extremely glad that I had taken Sunday off as well, because other than going to Bella's FastCAT, I pretty much wanted to spend Sunday asleep too, haha. (Though considering how much we drank vs. how little we typically do, neither of us was at all hungover, which was a pleasant surprise.)

This did really make me miss going out clubbing, which is usually my feeling after going to concerts of this genre. Alex... not so much. He said he had fun this time, aided by the alcohol, but his anxiety has gotten worse to a point that he dreads trying to go out. That's a shame, because I'd love to go out at least once a month or so, but I don't want to coordinate going solo, and I don't want to drag him out to be miserable. Alas!

I really do hope that Ritual Noize Fest continues beyond just this first year, and if so, I really look forward to future lineups!

Daily Happiness

1. Over the past couple years we've been trying to walk more places around town rather than automatically hopping in the car, and I'm very pleased with myself today for doing all my errands walking. We still have rhubarb in the freezer and I wanted to make a pie today, so I stopped at the neighborhood market I pass on my morning walk every day, but they were out of pie crust, so when I went out to the farmers market later, I continued on to the larger supermarket since I was about halfway there at that point and was able to get pie crust (and it was on sale!). When I got home, Carla reminded me about the Neosporin I was going to get for her toe, but I'd forgotten it. So I went out later this afternoon to the pharmacy and got that. Both the supermarket and the pharmacy are about a mile away, so it's not a long walk at all, but would previously have been just an automatic drive. Instead I got some walking in and made progress on my audiobook.

2. At Costco yesterday Carla got some croissants, and they come in a pack of twelve, so we'll be having sandwiches a lot for the next few days lol. Anyway, she made some tuna salad for dinner and added all sorts of things into it and it was probably the best tuna salad I've ever had. Looking forward to having some more for lunch tomorrow.

3. Molly testing out a new box.

Digital packrat.

In trying to free up apartment space, I need to de-accession some materials. In de-accessioning some materials, I need to free up hard drive space. In needing to free up hard drive space, I'm taking a long, hard look at what I've collected over the last couple of decades. Some of these files date back to freshman year of college. Few of them are shows I'm at all interested in rewatching. There's a half-season of something here, the last season of something else there, the season where I downloaded everything and then wandered away from the fandom halfway through watching them, episodes I later ripped from DVDs and Blurays. It's a weird form of digital nostalgia. There's no needing these. There's liking the record of having them, and there's no needing it.

Certainly for some of the newer ones where there's no boggling over downloading it that long ago, there's an ease in getting rid of them. Admitting I'm not going to watch that, giving up on the sense of obligation, reminding myself if I really want to watch it then I'll find some way to do it and if I really wanted I'd have likely done it by now. Sure, there's stuff like Rome where I downloaded the first season in 2007 and only got around to watching it a few weeks ago, but those I'd ripped so I knew I'd have everything, plus subtitles. By now, I'm not watching those old files because the quality's so low compared to what I can get now. I can find my way to the full seasons of Psych and 30 Rock if I'm so compelled, on one format or another, on box sets or a streaming service.

The technology of streaming remains largely positive to me. It's the vertical integration of the distribution methods and fragmenting of the market that's the true downfall of the whole affair. Ages ago, I saw it suggested that a Steam-like service for shows and movies would solve a lot of problems, and as there's less money in that than the alternative, it's going to take an act of God to get it going. Until then, I'm having to say I need to take comfort and relief in knowing I don't have to commit to hauling these around anymore.

Amusingly, checking the local library for DVDs of Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes gets me a David Bowie concert movie. I can't say it's wrong. Not what I'm looking for, and also not wrong.

It's gonna be May reading and sundry

I have been on a Clamp manga binge these last few weeks - I re-read all of Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle and xxxHolic and am now working my way through Magic Knight Rayearth in preparation for the reboot in October, and going to try and read as many other series as I can after that. It's been a journey!

The Rayearth reboot looks like Sailor Moon Crystal - an exact retelling of the manga with updated animation. I love the '90s version, but am excited for a new generation of viewers to be traumatized by the ending (especially if they only do one season).

I've been trying to watch the second season of the TRC anime, but it is so low-budget that most of the animation is pretty simplistic and there are lots of "slow pans over stills" to save money. The voice acting and music are great, but otherwise it's been a slog. This is one show where I would appreciate a reboot, especially since the Infinity, Celes, and Clow arcs were never animated in any fashion, but it will probably never happen. Mostly I'm just happy Clamp actually finished TRC, and that the ending was happy and upbeat by their standards.

Other things I read in the last few weeks:

Emily's Quest (Emily #3) by L.M. Montgomery - Oh, man, this is so good when it comes to capturing how it feels to be a writer and so many passages are lyrically beautiful... but the plot requires so much miscommunication and people ignoring their own feelings that I want to scream. The first half is a very Gothic plot in which Emily agrees to marry the older man that everyone has been telling her not to marry since she was a child after he dismisses her novel, which is fortunately averted in time, and then after a middle bit in which Emily has oh so many suitors (including a Japanese prince, which was really fun!) she is stuck in a love quadrilateral with her childhood friends, which is fixed at the last possible second, and the book ends with her getting together with her childhood love interest, as heavily foreshadowed since they met.

Anyway, all dramatics aside, I really enjoyed reading this book and this series as a whole, and I think it's genuinely Montgomery's best, because it's darker and more complex than the Anne books, and I would love to own it in paperbacks as well as e-books. On my list for potential Yuletide requests.

The Vanishing Cherry Blossom Bookshop - This was one where I looked at the cover and said "this seems like it could be interesting" and it wasn't. Even a metafictional twist couldn't help. But the cover was pretty, I'll give it that.

Hot Chocolate on Thursdays by Michiko Aoyama - A chain of interlinked short stories that comes back around at the end and ties everything up neatly. No magical realism at all and probably the better for it.

Magical Girl Dandelion v1 - I love the aesthetic of a dandelion-themed magical girl who fights with a parasol, and I think this series has the potential to go interesting places, but I'm still not sure how I feel about it yet. Right now it reads like a cross between Madoka Magica and Magilumiere, except that our heroine's best friend is also one of the monsters (who are more complex than they initially appear).

Chainsaw Man v2 - Denji is learning about the hedonic treadmill, and I think it's such a great way of framing the classic shounen power progression. Also we get the first whispers of a really big bad, the gun devil, which will likely take multiple volumes to resolve. Can't wait.

Go for it, Nakamura - One-volume series about a high school kid trying and (mostly) failing to get close to his crush. It's cute, but I don't have strong feelings about it. The pet octopus was the most interesting detail, but only came up a few times.

Witch Hat Atelier Kitchen v5 - Volume 5 of cottagecore wizard husbands and still going strong! Believe it or not, this runs in a seinen magazine, lol.

Day 75: Shadow Brightens

It’s been three weeks since Shadow’s freedom day, after eight weeks of crate rest to ensure no stray heartworms clogged up his blood supply.

I’d hoped that on 15 April he’d spurt out the back door and explore every blade of grass and clump of dirt in our back yard. Instead, he’s deliberately lowering his DEFCON level in response to gentle encouragement and constant treats.

Recent achievements:

  • Leaving his crate and curling up in his own bed at the foot of ours. (He loves his crate; we only close the door when we leave him in the house)
  • Responding to my Shadow, come! by moving to me and sitting within easy reach of my treat-filled fingers.
  • Walking on our nearby bike path, which offers humans of all ages, other dogs, bicycles, ebikes, emotos, skateboards, power scooters — in general a hell of a lot of stimulation.
  • Walking briskly without stopping to sniff, attached to my powerchair (MyGuy transfers the connection from his lead to mine after we’ve left the house, because the ramp exit is super narrow.)
  • Permitting me to scratch his butt while MyGuy fondles his ears.
  • Meeting two of the gentler neighborhod dogs — just nose to nose; hasn’t done the full tip-to-tail sniff
  • Very politely greeting visitors, sniffing their fingers and returning to his crate.

Slow but steady, in the correct direction.

Iran

What I didn't have on my bingo card for 2026 was AI LEGO videos from Iran... (Probably the only use of AI slop that I would defend.) I hope they have educated many people on issues they might otherwise not know. (Yes they're propaganda, but when speaking about the rot in America they are not wrong.)

Now there are many, many videos, but this one's my favourite:

Same sun rising, but we're living in hell,
while the leaders are ringing the funeral bell.
Love for the people, but the system must cease,
from Tehran to DC, we're screaming for peace...

~

I don't feel like writing any essays on the situation, but I still vividly remember the Green Movement in 2009. (Just follow the tag to see my posts from back then.) It's where this icon is from. Remember watching the news with hope and terror, seeing the sea of people protesting and thinking that surely they would win?

And then they didn't.

I have re-uploaded a video from back then (8.81MB):

My Elementary Schoolmate.flv

My Elementary Schoolmate.mov

My Elementary Schoolmate.wmv

Content/trigger warning: The footage is exclusively from the 2009 protests. Very raw and powerful, and a lot of violence and injury.

The song is from 1979, and apparently they were singing again during the Green Revolution. (Lyrics here.)

So yeah. The Iranians know a lot about living under a repressive regime...

City of Others by Jared Poon

City of Others

3/5. Urban fantasy about a middle manager in a government agency in Singapore intended to keep the supernatural elements of society quiet.

Okay. Kind of Rivers of London but with a queer protagonist and far less voicey. Though it turns out the voiciness goes a long way to selling all the infodumping you need to do in a fantasy like this.

A good time, with a particularly interesting set of magical ideas. But I suspect someone made him cut, like, 25% of his manuscript or something, because there’s a lot of jerky pacing and weird gaps where I’m like ‘wait, we just met this person and now she’s a core part of the team and we all care about her? Did I miss something?’ Also, it’s all trying just that bit too hard to tie into a neat thematic bow (grief and letting go). Very debut, is what I mean. Naturally it is going to be a series; I might keep going, I might not.

Check-In Post - May 9th 2026

Hello to all members, passers-by, curious onlookers, and shy lurkers, and welcome to our regular daily check-in post. Just leave a comment below to let us know how your current projects are progressing, or even if they're not.

Checking in is NOT compulsory, check in as often or as seldom as you want, this community isn't about pressure it's about encouragement, motivation, and support. Crafting is meant to be fun, and what's more fun than sharing achievements and seeing the wonderful things everyone else is creating?

There may also occasionally be questions, but again you don't have to answer them, they're just a way of getting to know each other a bit better.

This Week's Question: What do you wish you could get right first time, every time?

If anyone has any questions of their own about the community, or suggestions for tags, questions to be asked on the check-in posts, or if anyone is interested in playing check-in host for a week here on the community, which would entail putting up the daily check-in posts and responding to comments, go to the Questions & Suggestions post and leave a comment.

I now declare this Check-In OPEN!
