So I co-wrote a song tonight. My first experience of writing to metre and rhyme- clearly, having Kate next to me with a tune, and starter couplets, is the key.

This song is dedicated to the Weich sisters and their housemate Anne-Marie...

Your house is long and narrow
and your bookcases are thin
there's no room here for a sparrow
but i think I'll still come in.

And there's a scary room downstairs
Where I will never go!
You've even named your dining chairs
Though they're not names I know.

Oh! This house is my favourite place to go,
You're all here and you know I love you so!

Your house is warm and cosy
And there's always food for all.
The neighbours might be nosy,
And yet we have a ball.

You know if you should ever leave,
Then I'd just have to say
That my poor heart would always grieve;
I'd have nowhere to stay!

Kate is going home tomorrow. But when she gets back I will get her to sing it into Wavepad, and make an MP3 out of it. If she can give me chords, we might be able to get Dad to do us a backing track on mandolin. And then we would have musical evidence of our very evident fabulosity.

"Your home is long and narrow
And your bookcases are thin
Still, there's not a single Hogwarts House
I couldn't fit you in"

hey, this song was also notable because it engendered 40 straight minutes in which I didn't think about HP. don't ruin it now ;)

and there's a centaur in the forest
who often reads the sky
but i like Sybil quite the best
although she thinks I'll die...

excuse me, we're editing your verse.

your wand is long and narrow,
and your broomstick is so thin,
Still, there's not a single Hogwarts House
I couldn't fit you in.

aaand we're editing my verse to make it fit the tune...

And there's a centaur in the wood
who often reads the sky;
I'd like Sybil if I could-
you see, she thinks I'll die...

"I'm the Sorting Hat and I cannot lie
You Hufflepuffers can't deny
Professor Sprout walks in with some earmuffs on her waist and some Mandrakes in your face
You get sprung!"

From where did you get your starters? Or is it too early to tell...

( and sorry; I thought I'd posted this already. Apparently I was wrong :( )

I commented that "your house is long and narrow", and kate spontaeneously sang "and your bookcases are thin". then the tune turned up in her head. We worked out the rest of verse one together, she gave me the first couplet of verse two, and then away we went. I did most of the dreaming up lines after that, with kate fine tuning it to fit the metre.
